2021 Class Blogs
Like so many other organizations Neighborhood Art Center had big plans for 2020! We planned throughout 2019 to start a new project called 52 artists in which we had books, biographical information, and an art project to go along with a new artist every week of the year. However, like many of the best laid plans for 2020, it didn’t happen quite the way we expected it to. We put a few artists information on our instagram and we had art projects for some of the different artists at our open studio, but the reach of the program just hasn’t been as far as we want it to go.
So, this year in 2021, we decided to plan our class schedule around artists — some of whom were part of our 52 artists program. Each week we choose 3 artists who have something in common: things like colors, shapes, style, etc. We learn about each artist individually and then do a project based on their art, maybe a certain famous piece, using a technique they pioneered, or thinking about the purpose or meaning behind the art and applying it to our own. By the end of the class we want our students to have a deeper understanding of the reasons we brought these artists of different backgrounds, time periods, and methods together, and hope they have learned new ways to make and think about art.
As we still have to limit our class and open studio sizes due to Covid-19 we want to make sure our curriculum is open and available to people who want to make art at home! So each week, along with the classes, we will choose one artist to write up a biography for and then share the projects we did for each artist that week. We know that people don’t usually have access to the supplies we have so we will include some different variations of the project using things you might have around your house and ways to make it all less messy.
